Knowing The Truth

Once we have accepted the Truth we must brace ourselves to explore and deal with the consequences of the Truth. For instance, if I am one day confronted with the fact that X is true, and Y contradicts X, then Y is no longer true, even if I have believed in Y my whole life. If my whole life is based on Y being true, then my whole life is going to change. The more I experience X, the more things about Y I discover to be wrong.

We should use the word “know” in its original sense: intimate experience and oneness. “Adam knew his wife Eve”, meaning they had intercourse with one another. It is not a mental assent or head knowledge, i.e. “Oh I know that.” It is a coming into union with Truth experientially and existentially. The Truth is there for us to know, but we cannot know the Truth until we accept it. The prophet does not (or should not) just bring a message, the prophet IS the message. If the message has not changed the messenger then it is nothing but empty words. Once we accept it we will be changed by it. Truth is not Truth if it has not changed you. If it is an ethereal thing out in space that you can just pontificate about then it is not Truth.

When we know the Truth, that is, when we are one with Truth so that it is ours experientially and not just theoretically, then the Truth will make us free. Talking about Truth will not make us free, but knowing it will. How do we know it? Through experience. I daresay we do not know the Truth through study. Oh, we can learn about it through study, but we cannot know it through study. To know it is to live it. To live it is to know it. What are you doing with it? Has it changed you? That is what makes it Truth.

Not once have I talked about understanding the Truth, and there is a reason. We cannot seek understanding as a thing in itself. If we know the Truth then understanding will follow, but knowing is never the result of understanding. Indeed, we often mistake understanding for knowing, at our peril. If our understanding does not flow out of our knowing, then our understanding will eventually be revealed as misunderstanding.

 I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my 
assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ‘I’m glad I have a 
good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,’ I thought
 
Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and 
filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to 
start a conversation. ‘Where are you headed?’ I asked the soldier 
seated nearest to me.
 
‘Chicago – to Great Lakes Base. We’ll be there for two weeks for 
special training, and then we’re being deployed to Iraq ‘
 
After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack 
lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours 
before we reached Chicago, and I quickly decided a lunch would help 
pass the time.
 
As I reached for my wallet, I overheard soldier ask his buddy if he 
planned to buy lunch. ‘No, t hat seems like a lot of money for just 
a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks. I’ll wait 
till we get to Chicago ‘
 
His friend agreed.
 
I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I 
walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a 
fifty dollar bill. ‘Take a lunch to all those soldiers.’ She 
grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she 
thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq; it’s almost like you are 
doing it for him.’
 
Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers 
were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ‘Which do you like 
best – beef or chicken?’
 
‘Chicken,’ I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went 
to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate 
from first class. ‘This is your thanks.’
 
After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, 
heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. ‘I saw what you did. 
I want to be part of it. Here, take this.’ He handed me 
twenty-five dollars.
 
Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming 
down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped 
he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers 
only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, 
smiled, held out his hand, an said, ‘I want to shake your hand.’
 
Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain’s hand. 
With a booming voice he said, ‘I was a soldier and I was a military 
pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness 
I never forgot.’ I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all 
of the passengers.
 
Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. 
A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his 
hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in 
my palm.
 
When we landed in Chicago I gathered my belongings and started to 
deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who 
stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked 
away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!
 
Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their 
trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them 
seventy-five dollars. ‘It will take you some time to reach the 
base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.’
 
Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their 
fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a 
prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were gi ving their all 
for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals.
 
It seemed so little…
 

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank 
check Made payable to ‘The United States of America ‘ for an amount 
of ‘up to and including my life.’ That is Honor, and there are way 
too many people in This country who no longer understand it.’

Look at my fellow conservatives! There they go, glumly shuffling along, depressed by the election aftermath. Not me. I’m virtually euphoric. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not thrilled with America ’s flirtation with neo socialism. But there’s a massive silver lining in those magical clouds that lofted Barak Obama to the Presidency. For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America : The Era of White Guilt is over.

 

This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn’t give a fluff about skin color, and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man. Not just any black man. A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively worked with America-hating domestic terrorists. Wow! Some resume! Yet they made Barak Obama their leader. Therefore, as of Nov 4th, 2008, white guilt is dead.

 

For over a century, the millstone of white guilt hung around our necks, retribution for slave-owning predecessors. In the 60s, American liberals began yanking that millstone while sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution. But if a black man can become President, exactly what significant barrier is left? The election of Barak Obama absolutely destroys the entire validation of liberal white guilt. The dragon is hereby slain.

 

So today, I’m feeling a little “uppity,” if you will. From this day forward, my tolerance level for having my skin color hustled is now exactly ZERO. And it’s time to clean house. No more Reverend Wright’s “God Damn America ,” Al Sharpton’s Church of Perpetual Victimization , or Jesse Jackson’s rainbow racism. Cornell West? You’re a fraud. Go home. All those “black studies” programs that taught kids to hate whitey? You must now thank Whitey. And I want that on the final.

 

Congressional Black Caucus? Irrelevant. Maxine Waters? Shut up. ACORN? Outlawed. Black Panthers? Go home and pet your kitty. Black separatists? Find another nation that offers better dreams. Go ahead. I’m waiting.

 

Gangsta rappers? Start praising America . Begin with the Pledge of Allegiance. And please…no more ebonics. Speak English, and who knows where you might end up? Oh, yeah…pull up your pants. Your underwear is showing. You look stupid.

 

To those Eurosnots who forged entire careers hating America ? I’m still waiting for the first black French President.

 

And let me offer an equal opportunity whupping. I’ve always despised lazy white people. Now, I can talk smack about lazy black people. You’re poor because you quit school, did drugs, had three kids with three different fathers, and refuse to work. So when you plop your Colt 45-swilling, Oprah watchin’ butt on the couch and complain “Da Man is keepin’ me down,” allow me to inform you: Da Man is now black. You have no excuses.

 

No more quotas. No more handouts. No more stealing my money because someone’s great-great-great-great grandparents suffered actual pain and misery at the hands of people I have no relation to, and personally revile.

 

It’s time to toss that massive, obsolete race-hustle machine upon the heap of the other stupid 60s ideas. Drag it over there, by wife swapping, next to dope-smoking. Plenty of room right between free love and cop-killing. Careful…don’t trip on streaking. There ya go, don’t be gentle. Just dump it. Wash your hands. It’s filthy.

 

In fact, Obama’s ascension created a gargantuan irony. How can you sell class envy and American unfairness when you and your black wife went to Ivy League schools, got high-paying jobs, became millionaires, bought a mansion, and got elected President? How unfair is that??? Now, Like a delicious O’Henry tale, Obama’s spread-the-wealth campaign rendered itself moot by it’s own victory!  America is officially a meritocracy. Obama’s election has validated American conservatism!

 

So, listen carefully…Wham!!!

That’s the sound of my foot kicking the door shut on the era of white guilt. The rites have been muttered, the carcass lowered, dirt shoveled, and tombstone erected. White guilt is dead and buried.

 

However, despite my glee, there’s apparently one small, rabid bastion of American racism remaining. Black Americans voted 96% for Barak Obama. Hmmm. In a color-blind world, shouldn’t that be 50-50? Tonight, every black person should ask forgiveness for their apparent racism and prejudice towards white people. Maybe it’s time to start spreading the guilt around.

I’ll tell you…

My life is never boring!

Even though I have a ‘full-on’ success mindset…and live my life through positive thinking, I still get everything ‘thrown’ at me!

Every time it seems that I am ’stepping up’…something suddenly happens…or someone suddenly appears to test my resolve.

A couple of years ago, I would have just held me hands up and shouted “I give up!”.

But not any more. Oh no.

Now…I KNOW that, just because I am acting the ‘right’ way, it doesn’t mean that things aren’t going to go wrong…BIG TIME! lol

And…every time that I stretch myself that little bit further…these ‘tests’ get that little bit harder…or a little more complicated.

But…I also KNOW that they are exactly that – TESTS!

They are not…’bad luck.
They are not…’failure’.
They are not…’fate’

I don’t ask myself ‘Why me?’

I just ask myself two things…

1) What is the lesson that I can learn from this?
2) How I can I ensure that it won’t happen again?

YOU should ask yourself these questions whenever the world seems to be going against you.

Remember…YOU are in complete control of your life…and how you learn from it.

So…LEARN from your ‘bad’ experiences…don’t suffer them!

20.  Be more concerned with your character than your reputation.  Your character is who you really are, your reputation is merely what others think you are.

No matter the storm, there is always a rainbow waiting.  Leave gentle fingerprints on the soul of another for the angels to read.  I do not want to get to the end of my life and find that I  only lived the length of it.  I want to live the length of it as well.

I have always heard about this democracy countdown. It is interesting to see it in print. God help us, not that we deserve it. 

 

How Long Do We Have? 

 

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the   University   of  Edinburgh   , had this to say about the fall of the  Athenian   Republic some 2,000 years earlier: 

 

‘A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.’ 

 

‘A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.’ 

 

‘From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.’ 

 

‘The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years’

 

‘During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

 

1. from bondage to spiritual faith;

 2. from spiritual faith to great courage;

 3. from courage to liberty;

4. from liberty to abundance;

 5. from abundance to complacency;

 6. from complacency to apathy;

 7. from apathy to dependence;

Professor Joseph Olson of  Hamline   University School  of Law,   St. Paul  ,   Minnesota  , points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000  Presidential election:

 

Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29

 

Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000

 

Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million

Republicans: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1

 

Professor Olson adds: ‘In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare…’ Olson believes the   United States   is now somewhere between the ’complacency and apathy’ phase of Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation’s population already having reached the ‘governmental dependency’ phase.

Woman, 18, killed in I-94 accident east of Jackson

This is the accident which killed my 2nd cousin.
Michigan State Police Trooper Alan Fitzpatrick examines a car that was involved in the accident late Monday on I-94 in Grass Lake Township.

An 18-year-old Farmington Hills woman died in a three-vehicle crash Monday night in Grass Lake Township after she lost control of her car on icy I-94.

A Waterford man, 36, also was injured, but not seriously.

Police on Monday did not identify any of the people involved in the accident.

The woman was westbound about 9:15 p.m. between Mount Hope and Clear Lake roads when her car went off the highway and spun across the median into eastbound traffic, said State Trooper Alan Fitzpatrick.

An eastbound Pontiac G6, driven by the Waterford man, struck the woman’s Camaro in the driver side, he said. A Ford Explorer, also heading east, then clipped the Camaro as the driver, a 44-year-old San Francisco man, tried to avoid a collision, Fitzpatrick said.

The Explorer driver was not injured and his vehicle had only minor damage, said Fitzpatrick, who was patrolling the highway at the time and arrived within seconds of the crash.

There were no passengers in any of the vehicles involved.

Fitzpatrick said the roads were very slick and treacherous, even at speeds of about 35 to 40 mph. Speed and weather caused the Camero to leave the road, Fitzpatrick said.

The Pontiac’s driver was not to blame, he said. “There was nothing he could do.”

The Pontiac’s driver had a broken hand and an injured arm and wrist. The man was taken from the scene to Allegiance Health.

Firefighters had to extract the woman from the Camaro, which was badly crumpled, because she was pinned inside.

Fitzpatrick initially said she was in critical condition, but as he spoke an emergency worker informed him she “did not make it.”

The crash, which left the highway littered with debris, was the most serious of a series of accidents Monday night blamed on icy roads.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Joseph Quainton said there were more than 20 wrecks from about 5 p.m. to 11:20 p.m. No other crashes caused any serious injuries.

Not long ago I read a joke … It said all the politicians running for president are promising change to the American people. We send them billions and billions of tax dollars and they send us the change.

Funny?

Not really; there is too much truth in it to be funny.

That got me to thinking … They all promise change. How about if they run on a promise of restoration rather than change. A restoration that would take us back in time to a place where things ran better, smoother and life was more enjoyable. Change? That, in truth, is what they have been giving us all along.

We used to have a strong dollar … Politicians changed that.

Life used to be sacred … Politicians changed that.

 Marriage used to be sacred … Politicians are changing that.

 We used to be respected around the world … Politicians changed that.

 We used to have a strong manufacturing economy … Politicians changed that.

 We used to have lower tax structures … Politicians changed that.

 We used to enjoy more freedoms … Politicians changed that.

 We used to be a large exporter of American made goods … Politicians changed that.

 We used to be an openly Christian nation … Politicians changed that.

 We used to teach patriotism in schools … Politicians changed that.

 We used to educate children in schools … Politicians changed that.

 We used to enjoy freedom of speech … Politicians changed that.

 We used to enforce LEGAL citizenship … Politicians changed that.

 We used to have affordable food & gas prices … Politicians changed that, too. … and one could go on and on with this list.

 What hasn’t been changed, politicians are promising to change that as well if you will elect them.

 When, oh when, is America going to sit back with open eyes and look at what we once were and where we have come and say, enough is enough?

 The trouble is, America ’s youthful voters today don’t know of the great Americathat existed forty and fifty years ago. They see the world as if it has always existed, as it is now.

 When will we wake up? Tomorrow may be too late. When will America realize … Politicians are what is wrong with America ?

What needs to be changed are the Politicians!  Just as diapers are changed on babies when they become full , so to must the politicians!

Life is precious

Life is so fragile! One moment you can be playing and running around the house with your cat and the next moment the cat runs under your feet and gets stepped on. This is what happened last night. Shadow (cat) was injured and was vomiting and bleeding from her rectum. We kept her under observation all night. This morning She still was not better so we took her to the vet. Xrays showed internal bleeding and possible ruptured bladder. The vet performed a stomach puncture to verify the results. Sure enough blood and urine spewed into the syringe. The vet said there was nothing she could do. I had to call my family to give the bad news. With tears streaming down my cheeks, I told my daughter and said there is nothing that can be done except put the cat out of her missery, she had suffered long enough. The vet asked if I wanted to leave the cat or to stay. I decided to stay and say my goodbye. It was hard. I left the vets office with a very sad heart.

During that year of knowing Shadow, she made us laugh and now cry. Loosing a cat is nothing like loosing a child, a family member or a wife but our pets become part of the family and we still need to mourn the loss. The pain won’t be as bad because it’s not a human life, but the pain is real none the less. Shadow came  into our lives for only a short time. Goodbye Shadow, we’ll miss you.

Life is precious so make sure you tell your loved ones you love them and give them a hug and kiss them often.

Salvation Army, bell ringing and the joy of Christmas

I have a confession, I hate bell ringing. But I always give to the Salvation Army, they do a great job of helping people. I walk by  bell ringers all day long and do not think anything about it but when I come across carolers or singers doing Christmas carols I always stop to listen and give more than just pocket change. I do know when the SA started ringing bells instead of  having volenteers play or sing songs.

This past week I stopped by a merchant where a volunteer was singing out of tune and barely knew the lyrics. This volunteer put more Christmas joy in me than buying gifts for my family. This volunteer asked me what my favorite Christmas carol was to which I replied “Mary did you know”. He did not know the lyrics and asked if I could help him. I began to sing the lyrics to “Mary did you know” he picked up on a few words and repeated those same words over and over. He had the Christmas Spirit in him and it did not matter if he could carry a tune or if he knew all the lyrics. He put the joy of Christmas in my heart.

Just below the surface, within reach of the average basement, is an infinite reservoir of heat that never drops below 50 degrees F. The night-day cycle is more than ample to raise that temperature into the comfort zone, with a simple shift in Time. The use of daytime heat at night, and nighttime cool by day, is made possible by Thermal Inertia, and the engineered Lag-in-Time is a property of the thickness and Specific Heat of the solid wood walls.

 

HEAT PUMP HOUSE

The task of extracting useful heat from the geothermal reserve or outside air is usually relegated to the electric Heat Pump. They have been tacked onto homes by the millions – encouraged, even financed, by the electric utilities. You have seen them – noisy, power-hungry, CFC-filled, life-support machines – hanging off the side of an obviously troubled building.

Our solution, in the Enertia® Building System, is to make the house itself a heat pump, using the natural energy of rising solar-heated air to extract and enhance the pool of geothermal energy just beneath the building’s floor. Simple, foolproof, no CFC’s, no electric bill (see “Heat Pump House,” Popular Science, June 1992, p.42).

 

     
THE ENVELOPE

     Just how does a house, or office, or any ground-based structure get turned into a natural energy machine? The secret is an air path, or “Envelope” just inside the structure’s solid wood skin. It is a heat path on a sunny Winter day, a continuously recharging convection loop. A heat source, and extra insulation for a cold Winter night. A miniature biosphere, oxygenated by Sunspace plants. A fresh air-to-air exchanger with walls that breathe. A buffer zone to noise, wind, and outside pollution.

     It is a ventilation path on the hot Summer day and on the cooler Summer night, when it is open to the atmosphere. It is the dehumidification system when its permeable outer wall is hit by the sun. And always, an access channel to otherwise unreachable parts of the house when it comes time to update, add new wires, cables, pipes, or technology.

“FLOATING”

     The Enertia® House works because the walls have the ability to gain, hold, and release heat. They do double-duty as structure and storage. Their thermal mass and thermal lag leads to “Floating,” where stored daytime energy cancels out night-time need. Floating can last for days, keeping the house comfortable during periods of little or no sun. Massive houses experience seasonal “Float” as well, and can coast a month or longer when lightweight houses need artificial heating or cooling. Enertia® Houses float right through heat waves and arctic blasts that would endanger occupants of other buildings. DELTA T

    All architects and engineers work with the Heat Loss Equation. Heat loss equals the temperature difference (Delta T) divided by resistance (the familiar R factor). All modern attempts at energy efficiency have focused on the “R” factor – i.e. more and more insulation into a thicker wall. But reducing Delta T has the same effect – why not look at that? While insulation is necessary to increase “R” factor, Delta T can be reduced by natural means. The Envelope presents an entirely different Delta T to the living space than it would see if the house were single walled. Because of it, the living space never “sees” conditions colder than the geothermal temperature under the house! As the sunshine raises the Envelope temperature in the closed Wintertime loop, Delta T goes to Zero, and “R Value” is meaningless. At this point the Enertia® house is in equilibrium and Heat Loss = 0.

RADIANT HEATING

    The ultimate in heating and cooling, radiant walls and floors are inherent in the Enertia® Building System. When your feet are warm, you feel warm all over. It is efficient, dust free, even heat – more healthy and invigorating because the air you breathe is cooler. On the coldest Winter day, the Envelope keeps the North wall warm and you can lean up against it. Try that in a conventional house.

 

RADIANT COOLING

     The same thermal mass that acts as a heat source in winter becomes a heat sink in summer, again enabling an energy-shift- in-time. The envelope is opened to the outside for summer cooling – basement windows for intake, rooftop windows for exhaust. Natural ventilation carries off internal heat captured by the massive walls during the day. The permeable walls allow humidity to migrate towards the outer surface where it is evaporated by the sun. Feeling Icky

The past few days I have not been feeling well.  In fact I have been feeling down right icky!  Although I do not like feeling icky it’s for my best.  What am I talking about?  I am detoxifying my body.  For far to long I have not felt well.  I had foggy thinking, rashes, stomach problems, aches and pains all over, I had no energy, etc etc, blah blah blah.  Over the past few years I have been watching a show called “Know the Cause” by Doug Kaufmann. Doug has been saying there is a link between tumors, cancer and several other diseases and fungus.  So that being said I have decided to detoxify my body and now I am experiencing what is known as “die off”.

What are “Die-Off” Symptoms?

Die-off symptoms are “flu-like” symptoms caused by candida being killed off in large numbers, releasing its toxins into the system at one time. These “flu-like” symptoms are a type of healing or detoxifying reaction, also called Herxheimer reaction, that occurs within the body when it is trying to deal with the large numbers of toxins being released.  Fact is you get worse before you get better.

So how am I detoxifying my by mixing 1 tbl Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) with 1 tbl raw honey in a glass of water 2-3 times a day and a mega dose of vitamin C.  Plus changing my eating habits.  I’ll be reducing my sugar and carbohydrate intake. BTW do not use white vinegar, I read it can actually does the body harm.  I am not an expert so I will yield the advice. 

I always felt better while I was on antibiotics. But shortly after I was off the medicene I went back to the same symptoms.

Feeling Icky Update

A few days ago I added Acidophilus to my diet.  The die off symptoms are easing up and now I am having clear thinking.  Breathing (asthema)  is still slightly labored but is improving.  I have noticed that I do not have to stop to think about what I want to say.  It’s like my mind has synergised and went into hyperdrive.  All this with out having to caffinate myself.

I continue to detoxify myself using Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinager (ACV) with organic raw honey and mega dose of vitamin C.  I am reducing the vinager and honey ratio from 1 tbl spoon each to 2 tsp each.  Since starting on ACV and raw honey I have been eating less portions and adding fruits and nuts as snacks between meals.

Acidic pH Balance Will Discourage Bacteria, Yeast & Fungal Growth

It’s now been about 2 months since I began my detox.  The initial stages I felt absolutely miserable because of the die off.  Many people say they have lost weight on the Aple Cider Vinegar so far I am not one of them.  But I must say I am not using ACV to lose weight.  One week ago I began stretching and range of motion.  It’s a very low impact workout and takes less than 10 minutes.  I have to be very careful because the impingement in my shoulder kills me if I move wrong.

Everyone prays for God’s will for their life.  Including me!  I thought I was all prepared to answer God’s call if and when he calls.  The other day, I was invited to go on a short term mission trip.  One to Peru and one to Burma.  It was when I received a call from an ol’ friend that I realized that I was not truely ready to answer God’s will should he call me to go into missions.  I thought I was ready but I had not renewed my passport.

What it takes for us all to overcome the crazy economy

By and large, 70% to 90% of you wanted something to be done to calm the economy, but you didn’t want $700 billion in new debt to bail out Wall Street. The stock market has had record declines since then. What’s going on?

You need to remember that you need to take control of your life.

It’s disturbing that people in government totally disregard what their constituents tell them to do. It’s disturbing that the market goes down and the media panics about this. It’s disturbing that greedy banks made horrible, high-interest loans to people who couldn’t afford to repay, and broke people signed up for the loan and cried when they couldn’t afford it – like someone did something to them. It’s disturbing that arrogant people in Washington ignore their constituents and takes huge strides toward socialism.

All of these things are disturbing, but none will cause this great nation to cease to function. None of these things are the seeds to the beginning of the end. You’re okay. We’re going to be fine.

But the most disturbing thing is some people’s reactions.

Don’t react based on fear or panic. Another negative reaction is that you are looking to Washington to fix your problems. Why would you do that? They have never fixed your problems, and you want Obama or McCain to fix things. That’s ridiculous; there has never been a president who can fix your problems. They always say they can and they never can.

At what point did Bill Clinton fix any of your problems? At what point did he cause you to prosper? At what point did George Bush end your career or cause you to prosper? When did Ronald Reagan fix your problems?

When you look to Washington to solve your problems, we’ve got the seeds to destroy this country. It’s time for YOU to change YOUR life.

There was a sweet 43-year-old lady making $15,000 a year who called me asking what Congress was going to do to help her. My answer to her was “Nothing. It’s not their job. It’s your job to read a book or take a class to get better so you can make more. Why have you accepted this as your lot in life? Why are you sitting around waiting on Congress or president to fix your life?”

It’s not Washington’s job to fix what’s going on with you. If you are waiting on Washington to change something, you’ve got a long freakin’ wait! It is YOUR job to take care of you. Don’t sit around and watch TV and panic and think you can’t do anything. I’ve made and lost money, and every bit of that had to do with me being smart and diligent or stupid.

Quit blaming Congress or looking to them to fix you. YOU have to fix you! When you wait on the government to fix your life and wait for money to be taken from others and given to you, that’s a spirit of envy, and it’s wrong. The only system that works is capitalism functioning under moral restraint.

Get some moral restraint, become a capitalist, and go be somebody!

To All My Valued Employees,

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this
company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has
changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news
is this: The economy doesn’t pose a threat to your job. What does threaten
your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you
decide what is in your best interests.

First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against
employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a
Back Story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you
see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You’ve seen my big
home at last years Christmas party. I’m sure; all these flashy icons of
luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don’t see is the BACK STORY :

I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square
foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted
into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company,
which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent went
back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective
transmission. I didn’t have time to date. Often times, I stayed home on
weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was
married to my business — hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a
modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars
and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of
hitting the Nordstrom’s for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling
through the discount store extracting any clothing item that didn’t look
like it was birthed in the 70’s. My friends refinanced their mortgages and
lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my
life into a business with a vision that eventually, someday, I too, will be
able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in at
about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don’t. There is no “off” button for me.
When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to
yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and breathe this
company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend.
There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a
1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only see the fruits of that
garden — the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations… you never realize
the Back Story and the sacrifices I’ve made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right
decisions and saved his money, have to bailout all the people who didn’t.
The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same
luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I’ve paid is steep and
not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is
starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you
why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don’t pay enough. I
have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes.
Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on
taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess
what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and
regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my
time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for
quarterly taxes. You know what my “stimulus” check was? Zero. Nada. Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who
has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per
year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home
pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check?
Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this
country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you’d quit and
you wouldn’t work here. I mean, why should you? That’s nuts. Who wants to
get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your
job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don’t understand … to stimulate the economy you
need to stimulate w hat runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated
to me that I didn’t need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing
that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired
more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees
would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and
better salaries.. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don’t defibrillate
and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or,
do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and
always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it.
Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are
the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be
further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this?

It’s quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift
and simple. I’ll fire you and your coworkers. You can then plead with the
government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child’s future.
Frankly, it isn’t my problem any more..

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire.
You see, I’m done. I’m done with a country that penalizes the productive and
gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be
destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

So, if you lose your job, it won’t be at the hands of the economy; it will
be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country,
steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever.
If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no
employees to worry about….

- As Facebook works to make itself more relevant and timely for its growing member base with a profile page makeover, attackers seem to be working overtime to steal the identities of the friends, fans and brands that connect though the social-networking site. Indeed, Facebook has seen five different security threats in the past week. According to Trend Micro, four new hoax applications are attempting to trick members into divulging their usernames and passwords. And a new variant of the Koobface worm is running wild on the site, installing malware on the computers of victims who click on a link to a fake YouTube video. The Koobface worm is dangerous. It can be dropped by other malware and downloaded unknowingly by a user when visiting malicious Web sites, Trend Micro reports. When attackers execute the malware, it searches for cookies created by online social networks. The latest variant is targeting Facebook, but earlier variants have also plagued MySpace. Read more.

Ed Morrisey quotes an article from Bloomberg News that wonders what a Manchurian President would do if he wanted to destroy the economy:

Imagine that some hypothetical enemy state spent years preparing a “Manchurian Candidate” to destroy the U.S. economy once elected. What policies might that leader pursue?

He might discourage private capital from entering the financial sector by instructing his Treasury secretary to repeatedly promise a brilliant rescue plan, but never actually have one. Private firms, spooked by the thought of what government might do, would shy away from transactions altogether. If the secretary were smooth and played rope-a-dope long enough, the whole financial sector would be gone before voters could demand action.

Another diabolical idea would be to significantly increase taxes on whatever firms are still standing. That would require subterfuge, since increasing tax rates would be too obvious. Our Manchurian Candidate would have plenty of sophisticated ideas on changing the rules to get more revenue without increasing rates, such as auctioning off “permits.”

These steps would create near-term distress. If our Manchurian Candidate leader really wanted to knock the country down for good, he would have to provide insurance against any long-run recovery.

I have been saying this for a while now.  If Obama is so smart, which everyone claims, then why does he demonstrate a complete ignorance of ECON 101?  He knows what is good and bad for the economy but is blinded by his left-wing ideology, desparate to have some say on the outcome of it all.

I have to admit it. My liberal friends were right.

They told me if I voted for McCain, the nation’s Hope would deteriorate, and sure enough there has been a 20 point drop in the Consumer Confidence Index since the election, reaching a lower point than any time during the Bush administration.

They told me if I voted for McCain, the US would become more deeply embroiled in the Middle East, and sure enough tens of thousands of additional troops are scheduled to be deployed into Afghanistan.

They told me if I voted for McCain, that the economy would get worse and sure enough unemployment is approaching 8.8% and the new stimulus packages implemented recently have sent the stock market lower than at any time since 9-11.

They told me if I voted for McCain, we would see more “crooks” in high ranking positions in Federal government and sure enough, several recent cabinet nominees and Senate appointments revealed resumes of bribery and tax fraud.

Well I ignored my Democrat friends in November and voted for McCain. And they were right… all of their predictions have come true.

I have several friends whom have lost their homes because they were not able to make payments, largely due to the stupid upside down mortgage and the purchase of homes way over their budget they were allowed obtain from the banks.  I have just learned that people who are quite capable of making mortgage payment, have stopped paying their mortgage payment and stuffing their money into drawers, in mattresses and such in order to obtain a zero to 2 percent mortgage rate.  I admit the rate is tempting but not enough for me to fraud the American people.  These people are just as guilty as Enron, the banks and the governmnet for allowing stupid to be alllowed to run rampert in America. Yes, America has become hooked on stupid.

When citizens vote for themselves democracy will cease paving the way for a dictatorship.  The 2008 election was a vote against democracy!

What a wonderful idea, I just wish it had been mine. I have a feeling that USPS is going to have a heck of a lot of tea to contend with, after all it only costs 42 cents to send a message, hopefully heard round the world!!! I, like all of you, am a responsible citizen. I pay my taxes. I live on a budget and I don’t ask someone else to carry the burden for poor decisions I may make. I have emailed my congressmen and senators asking them to NOT vote for the stimulus package as it was written without reading it first. No one listened. They voted for it, pork and all. O.K. folks, here it is. You may think you are just one voice and what you think won’t make a difference. Well, yes it will and YES, WE CAN!! If you are disgusted and angry with the way Washington is handling our taxes. If you are fearful of the fallout from the reckless spending of BILLIONS to bailout and “stimulate” without accountability and responsibility then we need to become ONE, LOUD VOICE THAT CAN BE HEARD FROM EVERY CITY, TOWN, SUBURB AND HOME IN AMERICA. There is a growing protest to demand that Congress, the President and his cabinet LISTEN to us, the American Citizens. Socialism requires a suspension of economic laws and a suppression of human nature. It is also immoral, if not evil, because it limits, and often outlaws, voluntary exchanges of the fruits of one’s own labor for goods and services. Further, it coerces involuntary exchanges by confiscating the fruits of one’s own labor for purposes of redistribution to individuals and for purposes to which one objects.

Finally, what proof is there that capitalistic democracies have been “brutally destructive” toward minorities? Most of the practices that have been brutally destructive were established long before Western Civilization developed, and capitalism evolved as an economic system. Only under those two systems have the brutal practices common for millennia been gradually eliminated.

Karl Marx said socialism was a stepping stone to communism. Obama’s first book discussed how he gravitated toward Marxists and chose his friends carefully. His campaign platform is socialistic. Therefore, it is legitimate to throw the term “socialism” out there.

Latex is found in many household products, including balloons; condoms; adhesive bandages and tape; pacifiers; baby bottle nipples; dishwashing gloves; Spandex; elastic; rubber bands; erasers; some carpeting; bicycle and racquet handgrips; swimming goggles; and shoe soles. Patients also may have a cross sensitivity to fruits and vegetables. Bananas, avacadoes, chestnuts, and kiwis have a high association, while apples, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, melons, and other produce are only a moderate concern.
People with a latex allergy should avoid all exposures, wear a medical-alert bracelet, and always carry medications prescribed by their physician, such as an Epi-pen, nonlatex gloves, and written documentation of the allergy from a doctor. They also should inform all medical and dental providers, hospitals, and family, friends, coworkers, and employers about the allergy.

But with greater exposure to the gloves’ natural proteins, people began developing latex allergies, which can result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. Hopkins reports 6% of the general population is allergic to latex.

Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings

Guess our national leaders didn’t expect this, hmm? On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton , Colorado , was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.

They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript:

“Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.

“The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain’s heart.

“In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA – because I don’t believe that they are responsible for my daughter’s death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel’s murder, I would be their strongest opponent.

I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy — it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You’ve stripped away our heritage,
You’ve outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question “Why?”
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

” Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit.. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational
systems for most of our nation’s history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine’s tragedy occurs — politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

“As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA — I give to you a sincere challenge. Dare to examine your
own heart before casting the first stone!

My daughter’s death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!”

Religion and the Founding of the American Republic

In response to widespread sentiment that, to survive, the United States needed a stronger federal government, a convention met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 and on Sept. 17, 1787, adopted the Constitution of the United States. Aside from Article VI, which prohibited religious tests for federal office holders, the Constitution said little about religion. Its reserve troubled those Americans who wanted the new instrument of government to give faith a larger role and those who feared that it would do so. This latter group, worried that the Constitution did not prohibit the kind of state-supported religion that had flourished in some Colonies, exerted so much pressure on the members of the First Federal Congress that they adopted in September 1789 the First Amendment to the Constitution, which, when ratified by the required number of states in December 1791, forbade Congress to make any law “respecting an establishment of religion.”

The first two Presidents of the United States were patrons of religion — Washington was an Episcopal vestryman and Adams described himself as “a church going animal.” Both offered strong rhetorical support for religion. In his Farewell Address (September 1796) Washington called religion, as the source of morality, “a necessary spring of popular government,” while Adams claimed that statesmen “may plan and speculate for Liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand.”

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, the third and fourth presidents, are generally considered less hospitable to religion than their predecessors, but evidence shows that, while in office, both offered religion powerful symbolic support. During his two administrations (1801-1809), Jefferson was a “most regular attendant” at church services in the House of Representatives at which, surviving records show, evangelical Christianity was forcefully preached. Madison followed Jefferson’s example, although unlike Jefferson, who road on horseback to church in the Capitol, Madison came in a coach and four. Jefferson permitted church services to be conducted by various denominations in government buildings, such as the Treasury and the War Department. During his administration, the Gospel was also preached in the Supreme Court chambers. It is, in fact, accurate to say that on Sundays in Washington during the Jefferson and Madison administrations the state became the church.

Recently, scholars have contended that Jefferson adopted a more positive view of Christianity in the 1790s as a result of reading Joseph Priestly’s arguments that many of the miraculous features of Christianity to which Jefferson objected were not authentic, having been added at a later time by a self-interested priesthood. Whatever the reason, after becoming president in 1801, Jefferson began making statements about the social value of Christianity.

Religion and the Constitution

When the Constitution was submitted to the American public, “many pious people” complained that the document had slighted God, for it contained “no recognition of his mercies to us … or even of his existence.” The Constitution was reticent about religion for two reasons: many delegates were committed federalists who believed that the power to legislate on religion, if it existed at all, lay within the domain of the state, not the national, governments. Second, the delegates believed that it would be a tactical mistake to insert such a politically controversial issue as religion in the Constitution. The only “religious clause” in the document — the proscription of religious tests as qualifications for federal office in Article Six — was, in fact, intended to defuse controversy by disarming potential critics who might claim religious discrimination in eligibility for public office.

Religion and the Bill of Rights

Although there were proposals for making the ratification of the Constitution contingent on the prior adoption of a bill of rights, supporters of a bill of rights acquiesced with the understanding that the first Congress under the new government would attempt to add to it a bill of rights.

James Madison took the lead in steering a bill of rights through the First Federal Congress, which convened in the spring of 1789. The Virginia Ratifying Convention and Madison’s constituents, among whom there were large numbers of Baptists who wanted freedom of religion secured, expected him to push for a bill of rights. There was considerable opposition in Congress to a bill of rights of any sort on the grounds that it was “unnecessary and dangerous.” The persistence of Madison and his allies nevertheless carried the day and on Sept. 28, 1789, both houses of Congress voted to send 12 amendments to the states. Those ratified by the requisite three fourths of the states became in December 1791 the first ten amendments to the Constitution.

Religion was addressed in the First Amendment in the following familiar words: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” In notes for his speech, June 8, 1789, introducing the bill of rights, Madison indicated that a “national” religion was what he wanted to prevent and it is clear that most Americans joined him in considering that the major goal was to forestall any possibility that the federal government could act as several Colonies had done by choosing one religion and making it an official “national” religion that enjoyed exclusive financial and legal support. The establishment clause of the First Amendment meant at least this: that no one religion would be officially preferred above its competitors. What ever else it may — or may not — have meant is obscured by a lack of documentary evidence and is still a matter of dispute.

Washington’s Farewell Address

Washington’s Farewell Address is one of the most important documents in American history because the recommendations made in it by the first president, particularly in the field of foreign affairs, have exerted a strong and continuing influence on American statesmen and politicians. The Farewell Address, in which Washington informed the American people that he would not seek a third term and offered advice on the country’s future policies, was published in David Claypoole’s Philadelphia American Daily Advertiser on Sept. 19, 1796, and was immediately reprinted in newspapers and as a pamphlet throughout the United States. The Address was drafted in July 1796 by Alexander Hamilton (Washington also had at his disposal an earlier draft by James Madison) and was revised for publication by the president himself.

The “religion section” of the Farewell Address was for many years as familiar to the American people as Washington’s warning that the United States should avoid entangling alliances with foreign nations. The first president advised his fellow citizens that “Religion and morality” were the “great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens.” “National morality,” he added, could not exist “in exclusion of religious principle.” “Virtue or morality,” he concluded, as the products of religion, were “a necessary spring of popular government.”

Evangelicalism and the Emergence of the African American Church

Mrs. Juliann Jane Tillman, Preacher of the AME Church, P.S. Duval, 1844. Black churches were graced by eloquent female preachers from their earliest days, although there was, as in white churches, resistance in many quarters to the idea of women preaching the Gospel.

Scholars disagree about the extent of the native African content of black Christianity as it emerged in 18th century America, but there is no dispute that the Christianity of the black population was grounded in evangelicalism. The Second Great Awakening, beginning about 1800, has been called the “central and defining event in the development of Afro-Christianity.” During these revivals Baptists and Methodists converted large numbers of blacks; according to a contemporary estimate, there were by 1815 40,000 black Methodists and an equal number of black Baptists. Many African Americans were, nevertheless, disappointed at the treatment they received from their fellow believers, especially at the backsliding in the commitment to abolish slavery that inspired many white Baptists and Methodists immediately after the American Revolution. Blacks responded by trying to establish as much autonomy as possible within the Baptist and Methodist denominational frameworks.

When discontent could not be contained, forceful black leaders followed what was becoming an American habit of forming new denominations. In 1816, for example, Richard Allen (1760-1831) and his colleagues in Philadelphia broke away from the Methodist Church and founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which, along with independent black Baptist congregations, flourished as the century progressed. By 1846, the A.M.E. Church, which began with eight clergy and five churches, had grown to 176 clergy, 296 churches and 17,375 members.

The Mormons

Another distinctive religious group, the Mormons, arose in the 1820s during the “Golden Day of Democratic Evangelism.” The founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and many of his earliest followers grew up in an area of western New York called the “Burned Over District,” because it had been scorched by so many revivals. Yet the Mormon Church cannot be considered as the product of revivalism or as a splintering off from an existing Protestant denomination. It was sui generis, inspired by what Smith described as revelations on a series of gold plates, which he translated and published as the Book of Mormon in 1830. The new church conceived itself to be a restoration of primitive Christianity, which other existing churches were considered to have deserted. The Mormons subscribe to many orthodox Christian beliefs but profess distinctive doctrines based on post-biblical revelation.

Persecuted from its inception, the Mormon Church moved from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois, where it put down strong roots at Nauvoo. In 1844 the Nauvoo settlement was devastated by its neighbors, Smith and his brother being murdered in the havoc. This attack prompted the Mormons, under the leadership of Brigham Young, to migrate to Utah, where the first parties arrived in July 1847. The church has thrived since the removal to Utah and today is a flourishing, worldwide denomination.

Benevolent Societies

Benevolent societies were a new and conspicuous feature of the American landscape during the first half of the 19th century. Voluntary, ecumenical organizations devoted originally to the salvation of souls, but in due course to the eradication of every kind of social ill, the benevolent societies were formed by the pooling of resources of evangelicalism’s legions. The benevolent societies were the direct result of the extraordinary energies generated by the evangelical movement, specifically, by the “activism” resulting from conversion. “The evidence of God’s grace,” the Presbyterian evangelist, Charles G. Finney insisted, “was a person’s benevolence toward others.”

The earliest and most important of the benevolent societies focused their efforts on the conversion of sinners to the new birth or to the creation of conditions (sobriety sought by temperance societies) in which conversions could occur. The six largest societies in 1826-27 (based on their operating budgets) were all directly concerned with conversion: the American Education Society, the American Board of Foreign Missions, the American Bible Society, the American Sunday-School Union, the American Tract Society and the American Home Missionary Society.

Three of these groups subsidized evangelical ministers, one specialized in evangelical education and two supplied evangelical literature that the other four used. In seeking to convert the American people, the benevolent societies were consciously trying to create, simultaneously, a moral and virtuous citizenry on which republican government was thought to depend. They proudly asserted that they were “doing the work of patriotism no less than Christianity.”

Latex Balloon Allergies

Latex allergies are becoming more of a problem and here are some balloon tips and ideas: The allergies are caused by the powder in and outside of latex balloons. This powder picks up the latex molecules and then spreads it around a room where it may be inhaled and possibly cause an individual who has a latex allergy to have a severe reaction. Instead of using the plain rubber balloons for decorations, use the mylar (foil type) or plastic balloons or vinyl balls for table centerpiece, stage and room decorations. Mylar and plastic balloons are made without latex, last weeks longer than regular rubber balloons and can be reused until the self-sealing valve fails. To deflate a mylar or plastic balloon for recycling, remove any ribbons from the balloon; insert a common drinking straw into the valve until the air starts to come out. Gently squeeze the balloon and let the air out till flat, remove the straw, fold the flat balloon and store till next use. The mylar, plastic, polyurethane and vinyl balloons can be reused until the valve fails. The 4″ sized mylars in round, heart and star shape work well as water balloons, fill with a turkey baster and water, hand tie off like a regular balloon. The latex balloons are made of rubber; they will stretch from small to large size when they are blown up. The latex balloon substitutes (latex balloon alternative) will not stretch and are simply flat or filled. The mylar and plastic balloons will float with sizes 18″ and greater and take 0.5 cu ft of helium each to fill. Never let any person inhale the gas. Wash the mylar balloons with warm soap and water and they become clear! Mylar balloons will conduct electricity. Plastic balloons in 18” size, round and heart shapes will not conduct electricity. Please use non conductive curling ribbon and never a metallic ribbon on any balloon. Some schools and hospitals have started switching to non-latex balloon substitutes for latex sports balls, decorations, science experiments and crafts. Mylar balloons can be washed with warm water and dish soap to remove the coloring. End result will be a plastic clear balloon. Mylar and plastic balloons are not biodegradable and are harmful to the environment. Please do not release the balloons into the air! Small vinyl balloons (less than 4 to 4.5 feet in size) will not float, however there are large polyurethane inflatable balloons in different shapes that can be used for outdoor events and do not contain latex. The most common shapes in jumbo inflatable’s are hot air, blimp and round shapes. Custom shapes can be made of just about anything. They are refillable, come with a patch kit, last outdoors for about a year and can be custom imprinted. Vinyl spherical shaped balloons are an excellent mold for paper Mache’ and plaster projects or even balloon toss. They are just like beach ball material. Sizes range from 5″ to 96″. Vinyl balloons will not float at all. For a great substitute for latex water balloons. At your local supermarket, purchase a box of regular sandwich bags, not the zip lock, not the fold lock top, just cheap regular plastic bags. Fill the corner of the bag with a fist full of water, spin the bag, tie off like a regular balloon, cut off the excess plastic. They work great, readily available, cheap and fun. For those parents who wish a school to consider using non latex balloons, please call your school nurse or principal. Balloon twisters, a nice non latex balloon for twisting is available at www.uline.com. It’s a roll of poly bags, 3”, cut off desired length, heat seal or tie off one end, fill with air, then heat seal or tie off the other end. While not perfect, they do work pretty good. Latex balloon substitutes that are now available are in the following materials: Vinyl, Plastic, Polyurethane and Mylar balloons. Medical suppliers such as Merck, Johnson and Johnson, BD, techdevice.com, sell medically certified non allergenic latex for use in hospitals, labs, operating rooms and research. Ask for rubber bladders and bulbs that are certified to be non allergenic. Synthetic latex is not an allergen, natural latex made from rubber bush is Guayale. Run an internet search on Yulex, techdevice or mrballoon There are new laws being introduced and implemented into the legal system all the time on a state by state basis regarding balloons. Schools, the work place, hospitals, etc. have recently changed their policies regarding latex balloons. The Balloon Council in Washington DC has an excellent website that lists all new and pending laws regarding balloons by state. Also the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and the American Latex Allergy Association both offer a wide realm of information and help on this subject. Run an internet search using the keyword: Non Latex Balloons. Even the FAA and local cities have new laws regarding balloons.

“Huddle Up” Men in Missions Retreat 2009

Super Bowl Champion Lee Rouson, running back for the New York Giants during two Super Bowl victories, recently shared the weekend and a message from God’s Word the Friends Men in Mission at Heartland Conference Retreat Center just outside Columbus, OH.  Mr. Rouson shared how realizing his true identity as a child of God transformed his life and encouraged all of us to live each day as a gift from God.  
 
He taught that in order to take advantage of all that God has in store for us, we need to have a “huddle with God” each day.  Just as in a football huddle where the players need to be focused on the instructions from the quarterback and do exactly what he says in order for the play to be successful, we need to be completely focused on the Word of God and not allow anything to distract us from following its instructions for our lives. Mr. Rouson challenged the audience to “get out of the stands and get on the field and play!”

Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

FINDLAY, Ohio – A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School’s prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school’s rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an “incomplete” on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost’s stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school’s rules should not apply outside the classroom.

“He deserves to wear that cap and gown,” Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

“I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid,” Frost said. “I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end.”

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

“In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other,” England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music “is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people’s hearts and minds.”

England said Frost’s family should not be surprised by the school’s position.

“For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous,” he said. “It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to.”

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School’s view of prom.

“I don’t see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts,” Craig Kupferberg said.

Bottom line . . we’ve spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency … the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember. Ready??????? It was very simple… and at the time everybody thought it very appropriate. The Department of Energy was instituted 8-04-1977 TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. Hey, pretty efficient, huh????? AND NOW IT’S 2009, 32 YEARS LATER … AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE! THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY ‘WHAT WAS I THINKING?’ Ah yes, good ole bureaucracy. And NOW we are going to turn the Banking System and the Auto Industry over to them? God Help Us !!!!

The Business Section asked readers for ideas on “How Would You Fix the Economy?” I thought this was the BEST idea….I think this guy nailed it!

Dear Mr. President,

Patriotic retirement:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force – Pay them $1 million apiece severance with the following stipulations:

1. They retire immediately. Forty million job openings – Unemployment fixed.

2. They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.

3. They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis fixed. It can’t get any easier than that!

P. S.. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress and their constituents pay their taxes…

‘Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder! We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, ‘Stay the course.’
 
 
Stay the course? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned, ‘Titanic’. I’ll give you a sound bite: ‘Throw all the bums out!’  
 
You might think I’m getting senile, that I’ve gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.
 
 
The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we’re fiddling in  Iraq , the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving ‘pom-poms’ instead of asking hard questions. That’s not the promise of the ‘America’ my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I’ve had enough. How about you?  
 
 
I’ll go a step further. You can’t call yourself a patriot if you’re not outraged. This is a fight I’m ready and willing to have. The Biggest ‘C’ is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C’s of leadership, with crisis being the first.)
 
 
Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It’s easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory. Or send someone else’s kids off to war when you’ve never seen a battlefield yourself. It’s another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.
 
 
On September 11, 2001, we needed a  strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A hell of a mess, so here’s where we stand.
 
 
We’re immersed in a bloody war with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving.  
 
 
We’re running the biggest deficit in the history of the country.  
 
 
We’re losing the manufacturing edge to Asia, while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs.  
 
 
Gas prices are skyrocketing, and nobody in power has a coherent energy policy. Our schools are in trouble.  
 
 
Our borders are like sieves.  
 
 
The middle class is being squeezed every which way.  
 
 
These are times that cry out for leadership.
 
 
But when you look around, you’ve got to ask: ‘Where have all the leaders gone?’ Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the  point.
 
 
Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo?
 
 
We’ve spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.
 
 
Name me one leader who emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina. Congress has yet to spend a single day evaluating the response to the hurricane or demanding accountability for the decisions that were made in the crucial hours after the storm.  
 
 
Everyone’s hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping it doesn’t happen again. Now, that’s just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan. Figure out what you’re going to do the next time.
 
 
Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when ‘The Big Three’ referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, what are we going to do about it?
 
 
Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debit, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry.  
 
 
I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn’t elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don’t you guys show some spine for a change?
 
 
Had Enough? Hey, I’m not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here.  I’m trying to light a fire. I’m speaking out because I have hope – I believe in America. In my lifetime, I’ve had the privilege of living through some of America’s greatest moments. I’ve also experienced some of our worst crises: The ‘Great Depression,’ ‘World War  II,’ the ‘Korean War,’ the ‘Kennedy Assassination,’ the ‘Vietnam War,’ the 1970’s oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years culminating with 9/11.
 
 
If I’ve learned one thing, it’s this: ‘You don’t get anywhere by standing on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to take action. Whether it’s building a better car or building a better future for our children, we all have a role to play. That’s the challenge I’m raising in this book. It’s a “Call to Action” for people who, like me, believe in America’. It’s not too late, but it’s getting pretty close. So let’s shake off the crap and go to work. Let’s tell ‘em all we’ve had ‘enough.’

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn’t seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Ed Freeman is coming for you. He’s not Medi-Vac, so it’s not his job, but he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He’s coming anyway. And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back…. 13 more times….. And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise , ID ……May God rest his soul….. THE COMING COMMUNIST-AMERICAN AUTO INDUSTRY

Throughout our history, Americans have been inspired by many patriotic slogans such as “I have not yet begun to fight,” or “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country,” or “Remember the Alamo.” I don’t believe the nation will find much inspiration in the Obama Administrations new one: “Remember the Yugo!”

Barack Obama promised the “nation of change,” “We cannot, must not, and we will not let our auto industry simply vanish.” Nope. He has other plans. He’s going to build Yugos. Well, Obama is too clever to actually say that, but Yugos will certainly be the result of the anticipated federal take-over of the American auto industry.

Americans should all remember the Yugo- the pride of communist Yugoslavia – the first commie car to endanger American highways back in the 1980’s. Small, affordable and easy on gas- the perfect modern car for our current economic and environmental crisis that the Obama Administration is hell-bent on perpetuating, regardless of economic or scientific fact.

Of course, most Yugos only ran long enough to get off the lot and into the driveway. Those lucky enough to drive them further just had to keep a bucket in the back seat for emergencies – when it was necessary to stop and pick up the parts that flew off when their Yugo hit a pot hole. In short, the Yugo was an international joke because it certainly did showcase the skills of communist workers in an industry controlled by communist bureaucrats.

Now, in the United States, where the car for the masses was born from the genius of Henry Ford’s free market assembly line, Barack Obama and the Democrat Congress have declared themselves the saviors of the American auto industry. They know what Americans need best! They know how to get Americans buying American cars and get the economy going again.


Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (an auto-making genius) says Americans should drive smaller, more efficient vehicles. And she has the power to pass laws to make us do it – or at least the power to pass laws to make sure Chrysler and GM can only build the cars that Washington wants. And all Nancy and her gang of thugs in Congress have to do is pass stricter emission laws and even Ford, which hasn’t taken the Federal candy, will have to comply. And that saves the auto industry – how?

The whole point of the federal takeover of the auto industry, of course, is to enforce “climate change” restrictions on the industry. The code word is “cleaner” cars. That really means eliminating CO2 emissions to protect us from global warming. And it will be so much more efficient for government to dictate it directly to an industry it now owns than trying to argue with the pesky industry professionals who keep talking about what the buying public wants. Don’t they understand there is a crisis here?

There are, of course, three problems with that plan for the auto industry. First, since the 1970s, the federal government has been dictating emission standards, setting the bar higher and higher until today, American cars literally are so clean that they emit nearly zero pollution, and they can’t get any cleaner or more efficient. Second, the only way for cars to emit less CO2 is for cars to use less carbon-based fuel, and that doesn’t exist. And need we say it again, science is showing more and more evidence that there is no man-made global warming, so no matter how clean the car is made to run, it won’t make any difference and the regulations are completely unnecessary. Third, the American buying public doesn’t want the pesky little cars and won’t buy them. Detroit had better be very worried.

Obama’s scheme is not the first time government has tried dictating small cars to the American public. Back in the 1970s, as a result of Jimmy Carter’s man-made oil shortage, mandates were put out for smaller, more efficient Detroit cars. Remember the Pinto? As a result, all cars got smaller – even Cadillacs. Americans simply couldn’t squeeze their families into the things.

That’s when the environmentalists’ nightmare began. To get around the hated smaller cars, Americans started buying Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). Back then they were simply called trucks. The old fashioned, market-based Detroit automakers knew a good customer when the saw one and they started improving the trucks to be more family oriented. And the SUV revolution was on.

Today, almost every American family has one. And the government environmentalists hate it. They have been inventing rules and regulations ever since to try to get Americans out of the hated SUVs. They have tried to raise gas prices to make them unusable- didn’t work. They have offered tax incentives to get us to abandon them – didn’t work. So now they have just taken over Detroit. Now they will just dictate the cars Detroit can make.

Get ready America. The Corvette, Chevy Camaro, Dodge Viper, Dodge Challenger R/T, Mustang, Cadillac CTS and the Hummer are all on the Obama chopping block – even though that’s what Americans want to buy. It doesn’t matter anymore. We now have government-controlled industry dictated by those who do everything through political agenda. They have a vision and it looks a lot like the Yugo.
